With their goal of impeaching President Donald Trump lacking support, House Democrats have come up with a “Plan B” to go after the president.
House Democrats, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, are eyeing a move to censure Trump as an alternative to impeachment.
Censure is essentially a public condemnation, meaning it would just create a record in Congress that certain lawmakers are rebuking the president for his actions.
Democrats know they don’t have the votes or support to go anywhere with an impeachment inquiry, so they are trying this new plan to appease their far-left base.
Here’s more from The Hill:
A censure resolution – essentially a public reprimand – lacks the teeth of impeachment’s intrinsic threat to remove a sitting president.
But supporters say it would send a clear and immediate message to voters that Democrats are taking seriously their constitutional responsibility to be a check on executive misconduct.
The censure consideration comes at a time when Democrats are moving forward with other congressional tools to go after Trump administration officials.
The House is expected to vote next week to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt for declining to comply with a subpoena for special counsel Robert Mueller’s full report and related evidence.
The report continues:
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), who’s calling for immediate censure of Trump, said it would send a warning to future administrations that Congress won’t sit idle in the face of presidential malfeasance.
And unlike impeachment, which requires overwhelming Senate support, the Democratic-controlled House could censure Trump without a single Republican on board.
“The advantage of that is it can be done with the House,” he said. “We can hold the president accountable and say that his actions are unethical, and he’s engaged in blatant misconduct and that there can be some accountability for future presidents.”
Over the weekend, Pelosi told California Democrats that Congress would continue aggressive investigations into Trump and his administration, which will likely lead to the Democratic-controlled House starting an impeachment inquiry.
“In his report, special counsel Mueller warned us in the starkest terms that there was an attack on our election and an attack on our democracy,” Pelosi said.
“What is the president covering up?” she asked. “We must investigate the president’s welcoming of the assault on our democracy.”
“This isn’t about politics, it isn’t about partisanship, Democrats versus Republicans, no. It’s about patriotism, it’s about the sanctity of the constitution and it’s about the future of our nation. We will go where the facts lead us. We will insist on the truth. We will build an ironclad case to act,” Pelosi said.
Time will tell what happens next, but Democrats are trying everything they can to go after the president before the 2020 election.
What are they so afraid of?
